Trancoso Coastal Retreat
Set in Trancoso, on Brazil’s Bahian coast, Sig Bergamin and Murilo Lomas’s beach house is defined by the seamless relationship between tropical architecture, landscape, and interiors. Exposed wood, natural fibers, and wide openings establish the framework, while the decoration brings together art, objects, and furnishings collected over time. African masks, basketry, ceramics, antiques, and handcrafted pieces appear without hierarchy, creating rooms shaped by different cultural influences. In the living areas, sofas and armchairs are upholstered in textiles gathered through years of travel. Natural-fiber rugs layered over kilims and bamboo shades filter the light and help define the character of the house. Solid wood furniture, a Sergio Rodrigues armchair, and organically shaped tables reinforce the presence of Brazilian design. The palette draws directly from the surrounding landscape, with sand, white, blue, and green carrying through the interiors. Rather than relying on a singular vision of coastal living, the house possesses the rare balance of an interior that feels as though it has evolved over time. Everything suggests a life shaped by travel, collecting, and a deeply personal point of view.
